How I Teach
Drive
Reading Rules
Drive Reading Rules is an instructional booklet
that allows
teacher or parent to teach individuals to read, particularly those
with dyslexia. This teaching method is a new way to read and is a
complete step-by-step retraining process. As an instructor, it is
important to grasp what someone with dyslexia experiences while
trying to read. Imagine reading a page of words which have no
connection, meaning, or order, then remembering and explaining it.
This is their nightmare. Drive Reading Rules is simple, yet
functional. As your student begins to apply the rules and control
the written words, they will hear, understand, and remember what is
read. This teaching method makes it possible for the brain to take
in the sounds and absorb each thought in every sentence. Enhanced
hearing will increase comprehension which makes retention possible.
Silly Syllables
Nonsense words are made up from syllables such as fin, gle,
nic, tic, vel, and kle and are used in
exercises to train the student's right and left brain to work
together. This eases tension and enables the student to concentrate
on hearing what sounds are being made. Students soon gain confidence
by reading nonsense words. These tools can then be applied to
reading other material and then to improving their ability to spell.
Linguistic and Multi-Sensory Training
Linguistics is the study of human speech including the units,
nature, structure, and modification of the language. Finding words
that rhyme and then changing the beginning sounds will make words
more tangible. By learning to determine which group of letters makes
up a real word, the student will read words and non-words with ease.
Dyslexic students learn best when sight, hearing, and tactile senses
are combined. This is multi-sensory training. After training for
spelling, students can close their eyes and trace words correctly in
the air with their finger. Next, using linguistics, they are able to
spell a similar-sounding word.
